Why Choose Pedders Suspension for Your 4WD? Performance, Quality and More
Posted by Apex4WD Team on 26th Aug 2026
Your 4x4 left the factory set up for a compromise. The suspension had to flatter a showroom test drive, ride acceptably with an empty load bed and not wreck the economy figures all at once. That’s fine until you bolt on a canopy, load the drawers, hitch a trailer and point the thing down a green lane. Then the factory setup shows its limits: sag at the back, a wallowing front end and shocks that fade to mush halfway along a long, corrugated track.
That’s the gap Pedders fills. Here’s why it’s one of the most trusted names in 4x4 suspension and how to pick the right kit for your truck.
Who Are Pedders?
Founded in 1950 in Australia, Pedders Suspension has been building suspension for over seven decades. The harsh conditions of the Australian outback, from corrugations and extreme heat to overloaded utes and long haul towing, have helped shape every coil spring and shock absorber they produce. That experience matters, with the Australian outback providing one of the toughest proving grounds for suspension in the world. Products built to handle those conditions are more than capable of taking on British winters and rough, rutted roads.
Over the years, Pedders has grown from an Australian suspension specialist into a well established name in the global suspension market. Its range now covers far more than just shocks and springs, with products including steering components and other suspension parts designed to keep vehicles performing reliably on and off the road. This combination of experience, product range and reputation for durability has helped Pedders establish itself across markets around the world.
Pedders also design and manufacture their own suspension ranges to ISO 9001 standards. This helps ensure that the kit you receive performs consistently with the products tested and approved by Pedders. With decades of experience in suspension design and manufacturing, that consistency has become a key part of the Pedders reputation.
Why Your Factory Suspension Runs Out of Talent
Standard suspension is tuned for standard weight. Start living the 4x4 life properly and the numbers move fast: a roof tent, a set of drawers, a full water tank, a winch bumper and a couple of jerry cans can add 200kg before you’ve packed a bag. Your springs sag, your ride height drops, your headlights point at the treetops and your shocks work harder than they were ever designed to.
Offroad it’s worse. Standard shocks aren’t built for sustained abuse and heat is the enemy, push them hard on a rough track and the oil aerates, damping drops off and the ride goes vague, exactly when you need control most. A proper upgraded kit fixes all of it: restored ride height, controlled body movement and damping that holds up when the going gets long and rough.
What Makes Pedders Different?
Foam Cell shock technology: Pedders’ Foam Cell shocks use a microcellular foam insert that resists aeration and fade. In plain English: the damping stays consistent on long, rough tracks where standard shocks overheat and give up. It’s the difference between a controlled descent and a nervous one.
SportsRyder and TrakRyder coil springs: These are Pedders own spring ranges, wound to specific rates for each vehicle and each load scenario from an unloaded daily driver through to a permanently kittedout overland rig.
Matched kits: The real value is that Pedders engineer springs and shocks to work together for your vehicle and your intended load. Mixing a random spring with a random shock is how you end up with a truck that bounces, crashes over bumps or sits nosedown. A matched Pedders kit is designed as a system.
Built to a standard and warranty backed: ISO 9001 manufacturing, tight tolerances and a manufacturer warranty on every component. Seventy plus years of building suspension and nothing else shows in the details.
Standard, Heavy Duty or Extra Heavy Duty?
Picking the right kit comes down to how your truck actually lives:
Standard / comfort kits suit trucks that run empty or lightly loaded most of the week. You still get better ride height and control than tired factory suspension, without the firmer ride of a loadrated kit. If your pickup is mostly a daily driver with occasional adventures, start here.
Heavy duty kits are for trucks that carry weight most of the time, canopies, roof tents, drawers, winch bumpers, tools and for regular towing. Uprated spring rates keep the back end level and controlled instead of sagging and wallowing.
Extra heavy duty is for the seriously loaded end: permanent expedition setups and trucks that live at or near their limit.
The rule of thumb: if the weight lives in the truck fulltime, go heavier. If it doesn’t, a loadrated kit will ride firm when you’re empty for no reason. Not sure which way to jump? Give us a call we’d rather spec it right than sell you the wrong thing.

Fitting, MOT and the Sensible Bits
A few things worth knowing before you buy:
Fitting: Pedders kits are designed to bolt straight on, so any competent garage can handle it. We supply UK wide, if you need pointing to someone local just ask us, we'll be happy to help.
MOT: A correctly fitted lift kit isn’t an MOT problem the test looks at condition and function, not ride height.
Alignment: Always book a full wheel alignment straight after fitting. Change any suspension component and you change the geometry a proper alignment protects your tyre wear and keeps the steering true.
Insurance. As with any modification, let your insurer know. It’s a two minute phone call and worth doing.
Why Buy Pedders from Apex4WD?

Pedders Suspension FAQs
Are Pedders shocks any good?
Pedders shocks are known for durability and consistent performance and the Foam Cell range in particular is built to resist the fade that kills standard shocks on long, rough tracks. Seventy plus years of building suspension is a long time to get it wrong.
How long do Pedders shocks last?
Longer than the tired factory items they replace, in most real world use. Lifespan depends on how hard the truck works and the terrain it sees, but Pedders’ Foam Cell design is specifically built to handle sustained abuse without fading.
Which Pedders kit do I need for a canopy or roof tent?
If that weight lives in the truck permanently, you want a heavyduty (or extraheavyduty) kit with uprated spring rates to keep the rear level. A standard kit will sag under a fulltime load. When in doubt, ask us.
Can I fit a Pedders kit myself?
The kits are designed to bolt straight on, so a competent home mechanic or any garage can fit one. Book a wheel alignment straight afterwards either way.
Will a lift kit affect my MOT or insurance?
A correctly fitted lift kit isn’t an MOT issue. For insurance, treat it like any modification and tell your insurer a quick call covers you.
Is Pedders worth the money over a budget kit?
Cheap suspension is expensive suspension. A matched, loadrated Pedders kit rides better, lasts longer and is engineered as a system for your vehicle rather than a spring and a shock that happen to fit. You get what you pay for under a 4x4.
