Land Cruiser & Hilux Exhaust Upgrades: The XForce Turbo-Back Guide

Posted by Apex4WD Team on 20th Oct 2026

Toyota built the Land Cruiser and Hilux to run forever. They didn’t build them to breathe. A factory exhaust has to balance noise rules, cost and packaging. The result is pipework that’s fine in the showroom but restrictive on a big turbo diesel carrying a canopy and a full drawer system, with a trailer on the back.

A Land Cruiser exhaust upgrade is one of the most effective changes you can make to a working Toyota. This guide covers how turbo-back and cat-back systems differ, why the material and the bends matter, and which XForce exhausts fit the Land Cruiser 80, 100, 200 and Hilux.

The short answer: if you run a Land Cruiser 80, 100 or 200 Series, or a Hilux Mk6/Mk7 3.0L, a stainless steel, mandrel-bent turbo-back exhaust is the biggest exhaust upgrade available. It frees up flow, gives a deeper note and outlasts the factory system.

Why Upgrade Your Land Cruiser or Hilux Exhaust?

The factory exhaust on most Toyota 4x4s is built to a price and a noise target, not for performance. Smaller-bore pipe, crush-bent corners and restrictive silencers all make the engine work harder to push exhaust gas out.

A quality aftermarket exhaust gives you:

  • Better flow. A larger, consistent bore lets the engine breathe more freely.
  • Sharper response. Freeing up flow can improve throttle response over a restrictive factory system.
  • A better sound. A deeper, more purposeful note that suits the truck.
  • Longer life. Stainless steel outlasts mild steel factory pipework, especially with road salt and wading in the mix.

Gains vary by vehicle, engine condition and other modifications, so we won’t quote you a horsepower figure we can’t stand behind.

Turbo-Back vs Cat-Back Exhaust: What’s the Difference?

There are two main types of performance exhaust, and knowing the difference helps you buy the right one.

Turbo-back exhaust. This replaces everything from the turbo outlet to the tailpipe. It’s the biggest flow upgrade available because the tightest sections, closest to the turbo, get replaced too. On a turbo diesel Land Cruiser or Hilux, a turbo-back is usually the one to go for.

Cat-back exhaust. This replaces everything behind the catalytic converter and keeps the factory cat in place. It’s a smaller change, but still a proper upgrade over standard pipework and silencers. It suits petrol engines like the Land Cruiser 100 V8.

Mandrel-Bent vs Crush-Bent: Why It Matters

Budget exhausts are often crush-bent. The pipe gets squashed as it’s formed, which narrows the bore at every corner, so each bend becomes a choke point.

A mandrel-bent exhaust is supported from the inside while it’s bent, so the diameter stays the same the whole way through. A consistent bore through every bend means smoother, less restricted flow. That’s the whole reason for fitting a performance exhaust, and it’s why every XForce system is mandrel-bent.

304 vs 409 Stainless Steel Exhausts

Stainless steel is the material to look for in a 4x4 exhaust upgrade. The two grades you’ll see most are:

  • 304 stainless. Its higher chromium and nickel content gives it the best corrosion resistance of the two, and it holds its finish well.
  • 409 stainless. The workhorse grade of the exhaust world. It’s tough, copes well with heat and lasts far longer than mild steel. It develops a surface patina over time, but that’s cosmetic, not rot.

Either grade is a serious step up from mild steel for a truck that sees salt, river crossings and a regular coating of mud.

Who Are XForce?

XForce (also written X-Force) is an Australian exhaust manufacturer that has been building performance systems since 2001. Everything is developed in-house at its Australian research and development facility. Each system is tested on a chassis dynamometer before it goes into production, so the results are measured, not guessed.

That background is the point. Australia is where Land Cruisers and Hiluxes really get used: long corrugated tracks, heavy loads and serious heat. An exhaust that survives that will shrug off a wet British winter of green laning. Apex4WD is the official UK stockist.

Land Cruiser & Hilux Exhaust Upgrade FAQs

Is a turbo-back exhaust worth it on a Land Cruiser?
If you want the biggest flow upgrade, a deeper note and an exhaust that outlasts the factory system, yes. A stainless, mandrel-bent turbo-back replaces the most restrictive sections of the original pipework and should last the life of the truck.

Does an exhaust upgrade help when towing?
A free-flowing exhaust lets the engine breathe more easily, which can help response under load. Results depend on the vehicle, the weight you’re pulling and any other modifications, so we don’t quote figures. If you tow heavy, make sure your suspension, brakes and clutch are up to the job too.

Do I need a remap with a turbo-back exhaust?
Not necessarily. XForce systems are designed as bolt-on upgrades for the vehicles listed. Some owners pair a turbo-back with a remap. If you’re considering one, speak to a reputable tuner first, and declare both modifications to your insurer.

Will a stainless steel exhaust rust?
Not like mild steel. 304 stainless holds its finish best, while 409 develops a surface patina over time. That patina is cosmetic and won’t rot through the way a mild steel system does.

Does the XForce Hilux exhaust fit the 2.5L?
No. The Hilux Mk6/Mk7 system is for the 3.0L diesel only.

Is XForce an Australian brand?
Yes. XForce has designed and developed its exhausts in Australia since 2001. Apex4WD is the official UK stockist.

Will an exhaust upgrade make my Land Cruiser louder?
Yes. Expect a deeper, more purposeful note than the factory system.
