How to Install a Lift Kit: A Step-by-Step Guide for 4x4 Enthusiasts (For Toyota Hilux)

26th Nov 2024

If you’re an off-road enthusiast, installing a lift kit on your 4x4 is one of the best upgrades you can make. A lift kit improves ground clearance, enhances off-road performance, and gives your vehicle a more rugged, commanding stance. In this guide, we’ll show you how to install a lift kit on a 2018 Toyota Hilux—one of the most popular and capable off-road vehicles on the market.

Disclaimer: Lift kit installation requires mechanical knowledge and the proper tools. If you’re not confident in your skills, consult a professional mechanic.

What You’ll Need

Before starting, gather the following tools and equipment:

  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket and wrench set
  • Spring compressor
  • Pry bars
  • Adjustable spanners
  • Lubricant spray (e.g., WD-40)
  • Apex4WD lift kit for Toyota Hilux (includes suspension components, spacers, and bolts)

  • Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle

1.Safety First: Park your Toyota Hilux on a flat, level surface. Engage the handbrake and chock the wheels to prevent rolling.

2.Loosen the Lug Nuts: Slightly loosen the wheel lug nuts on all four wheels before lifting the vehicle.

3.Lift the Vehicle: Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.

Step 2: Remove the Front Suspension Components

1.Remove the Wheels: Fully remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels.

2.Disconnect the Sway Bar Links: Use a socket wrench to detach the sway bar links from the lower control arms.

3.Unbolt the Struts: Locate the strut assembly and unbolt it from the upper mount, lower control arm, and spindle. Keep the bolts and nuts for reassembly.

4.Remove the Strut Assembly: Carefully remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.

Step 3: Install the Front Lift Kit Components

1.Add Strut Spacers: Attach the strut spacers from the Apex4WD lift kit to the top of the strut assembly. Tighten the bolts according to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.

2.Reinstall the Strut Assembly: Position the modified strut assembly back into place. Secure it to the upper mount and lower control arm with the original bolts.

3.Reconnect the Sway Bar Links: Reattach the sway bar links to the lower control arms.

4.Repeat on the Other Side: Complete the same steps for the other front wheel.

Step 4: Remove and Replace Rear Suspension Components

1.Lift the Rear: Jack up the rear of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.

2.Remove the Rear Wheels: Fully remove the lug nuts and take off the rear wheels.

3.Detach the Leaf Springs: Unbolt the leaf springs from the rear axle and chassis mounts. Be careful as the springs may be under tension.

4.Install Rear Lift Blocks: Place the lift blocks from the Apex4WD kit between the rear axle and leaf springs.

5.Reinstall the Leaf Springs: Bolt the leaf springs back into place, ensuring the lift blocks are securely positioned.

Step 5: Final Adjustments and Reassembly

1.Double-Check All Bolts: Use a torque wrench to tighten all bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque.

2.Reinstall the Wheels: Mount the wheels back onto the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts by hand.

3.Lower the Vehicle: Use the floor jack to carefully lower the Hilux to the ground. Fully tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure.

Step 6: Alignment and Test Drive

1.Professional Alignment: After installing the lift kit, take your vehicle to a professional shop for a wheel alignment. This ensures proper handling and minimizes tire wear.

2.Test Drive: Take your Hilux for a short drive to ensure everything feels secure. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations, and double-check your work if needed.
